Hello!
Welcome to Veggies for Breakfast!
31 December 2009:
This morning, my eyes peeled themselves open before the sun had begun its ascent from the horizon. My neck stiff with swollen glands, my throat burned when I swallowed, I sniffled a bit of nascent cold out of my air passages. What a way to start the last day of the year, I thought. I had wanted to sleep in, but my body had other ideas. I stumbled to my feet, clicked on the space heater, fed the cat, and began cooking the breakfast I promised myself last night I'd cook today.
I also told myself last night that I would blog about this breakfast, and since this is my first post, I'm going to lay some ground rules for myself. First of all, this blog is a place for me to record and share my successes and failures at eating vegetables for breakfast in 2010. We'll see how I do for the month of January first, and if it's a success, well, I'll keep at it throughout the year.
Why am I doing this? Why not? Last fall, I began a new semester with a new breakfast routine. Every morning for a few weeks, I started my day with a small bowl of bright green matcha followed by a large bowl of steamed greens, usually mustard greens or kale, atop a bit of grain (quinoa, millet, amaranth, buckwheat, or rice) or a protein (eggs). I stirred in a teaspoon or two of coconut oil--sometimes as much as a tablespoon--and sometimes some butter (I also fried the eggs/grain in butter), and a bit of sea salt. I don't know what made me do it -- it must have been my body crying out for nutrients, because I have never felt so energetic and, well, clean, as I did when I was having my greens 'n grains breakfasts. I'm not sure why I stopped, but I did.
So, I'm going to pick it up again in 2010. I started this morning by slurping some homemade avgolemono soup (minus the egg) with some Cajun Grain rice fried in a bit of butter in a cast iron skillet. Veggies: carrots, onion, leeks. I also chucked in some raw garlic in there for good measure, and I'm hoping it'll do more for me than keep me from getting a kiss at the stroke of midnight! For breakfast dessert (a very important part of every meal), I downed two Oil of Oregano capsules. I'll make some tea in a bit. I plan on spending the rest of my day resting, shopping at the Red Stick Farmer's Market for greens, and sipping tea.
